About Prescription Price Checker
An independent price checker for UK prescriptions, operated by Ellul Solutions Ltd. It prices a private prescription from the NHS Drug Tariff, the dispensing fees providers publish and VAT, and it works out whether an NHS prescription should be free or cheaper with a prepayment certificate.
Why this site exists
Every guide on private prescription costs says the fee is £5 to £15 and stops there. We wanted the arithmetic done per medicine from a source anyone can check, and a record of what named pharmacies actually publish, updated on a date you can see.
Who it is for
Someone holding a private prescription who wants a number before phoning pharmacies
Someone deciding between a private prescriber and their NHS GP for a medicine the NHS would also prescribe
Anyone in England paying £9.90 an item who has never checked the exemptions or the PPC maths
What is on this site
One question, "private prescription", answered with a checker that works on the page with no account, 4 guides on the questions around it, a data table you can cite (the figures and their method), and the sources every figure rests on.
- How much is a prescription? The NHS charge in England: An NHS prescription is £9.90 per item in England and free in Scotland, Wales and NI. What an item is, and when a £114.50 PPC is cheaper.
- NHS prescription prepayment certificate (PPC): current prices: A 3-month PPC costs £32.05 and a 12-month £114.50. The 12-month certificate pays for itself at 12 items a year. How to buy, breakeven maths, and refunds.
- Who gets free NHS prescriptions? The full exemption list: Free NHS prescriptions in England: age exemptions, pregnancy (MatEx), medical conditions (MedEx), qualifying benefits, Universal Credit rules and the HC2 certificate.
- Private prescription cost examples: six medicines priced line by line: Six common private prescriptions priced from the September 2026 Drug Tariff with a £9.90 fee and 20% VAT, beside the £5 to £15 fee range and the NHS charge.
What it does not do
- No medical advice, and no questions about what a prescription is for: the enquiry form never asks and the tool never records it
- No invented prices: a medicine we cannot price from the Drug Tariff is not listed, and a pharmacy that publishes no fee is recorded as not published
- No ranking of pharmacies by anything we are paid: an introduction fee is disclosed beside the form and never changes a figure on the page

Prescription Price Checker is an independent information site operated by Ellul Solutions Ltd. It is not a pharmacy, is not affiliated with the NHS, NHSBSA or any government body, and nothing here is medical or financial advice. We may be paid a fee by a pharmacy we introduce you to; that does not change the price you are quoted. Private estimates use the September 2026 Drug Tariff and NHS charges are the rates currently published for England; confirm the current figures on nhsbsa.nhs.uk and nhs.uk before relying on them.
